SERVICE LEARNING PODCASTS (2019)                               (Click here for 2023 project)

The third graders of “Third Grade Audio” made two Service Learning podcasts. Each one is about a local social service organization, which is working to help make the world a better place

  • Third Grade Audio on WBEZ, Chicago Public Radio
  • Listen to third graders being interviewed about making the “Reach Out and Read” podcast:
  • TGA on WBEZ

An outline of this Service Learning experience:

  • GOAL: Make the World a Better Place  (“Live and Serve” is our school’s motto)
  • In two groups, the class listed every problem/need in the world that they could think of
  • They organized all the items on the list into categories.
  • Each group voted on a category they wanted to explore further  (One chose “Children and Education”, the other chose “Hunger”)
  • Partners searched online for local social service organizations which were dealing with these two issues
  • We found “Reach Out and Read” and “Lakeview Pantry”
  • We wrote an email to both agencies asking if we could make a podcast about them. They both said, “Yes.”
  • Partners researched the organizations online, beginning with the websites of the two agencies.
  • Each student wrote her or his own interview questions, based on the research done.
  • At school, one group recorded an interview with The Illinois Director and Illinois Medical Director of Reach Out and Read
  • The other group visited the Lakeview Pantry, took a tour and interviewed the Volunteer Program Coordinator and another worker.
  • Back at school, partners wrote podcast scripts
  • We took parts of each script, along with the tape from the interviews, and “smooshed” them all together into a final podcast script
  • Students individually recorded their narration for the podcast, which was then woven together with our interview clips to create the final podcast episodes

  • Our hope is that these podcasts will help the respective agencies garner more support and help spread the word about how they are helping people
